Let's Get Rolling!
If you know several families who might be intrigued in a homeschool co-op, the next stage is to execute a brainstorming meeting to explore the choices. Remember it is best to start small. It is easy to get overwhelmed, so keep the size of the co-op small at first.
Now is the time to discuss the classes which will be offered. The possibilities are literally unlimited. Most co-ops are organized around a style. Consider curriculum that might be useful and read homeschool curriculum reviews. Find out what classes parents are interested in teaching. Here is just a sampling of ideas:
Traditional Education Music World History Mathematics Biology Drama Cooking P.E. College Preparatory Composition Journalism Geography
After the classes have been decided upon, the schedule will be drawn up. Expenses can be discussed as well as other miscellaneous topics. Generally, it is good to have someone act as a coordinator.
Further Considerations:
Essentially, get somebody to look after the younger children while the moms are teaching. We have often had someone teach a pre-school class that coincides with the other classes, especially while those moms are teaching.
Choose ahead of time on a standard of behavior for children in class. It mostly helps if a mom or dad can be there, yet the teacher should feel free to settle down noisy kids. Obviously, the parents/teachers must not treat the children in a demeaning approach. Being open and honest and resolving disputes promptly usually goes far in sustaining good relationships.
Occasionally it may become obligatory for a co-op to split when the interests change or when families have different expectations. This is a necessary catalyst for development.
Co-op Experiences
Our first co-op experience began when my oldest daughter engaged in a biology co-op that met once per week. This was for high school age students and all I need to do was pay a fee and drop her off. She learned a lot there and it brought on an area of interest for her. She decided then that she would like to be a nurse and she will finish her nursing degree in six months.
The first co-op that I helped organize was centered on a science unit study. We all had younger kids and wanted to give them a practical exposure to science that nobody seemed to be doing at home. We looked at a lot of homeschool curriculum reviews before deciding on the curriculum we would use. Our class met for a couple of hours once a week and then we had lunch and also play time. The children loved it, and the parents recognized they were also fulfilling their own need for motivation and support.
While our children grew we began to improve, adding in a history class and a Five in a Row read aloud time. At one time we were blessed to have a gifted artist, who helped draw out the artist in all the children. Guest speakers, who spoke on several topics and provided demonstrations, were an excellent addition to our co-op.
Right now, our co-op offers 3 classes; a history class that is taught chronologically, a writing class and a literature class that both match with the history.
Now is the time to think of a need that needs met in your homeschool. Are there other families who might want to join you? Have you got a location? Have you looked at different homeschool curriculum reviews to enable you to decide which ones might be useful?
Jump in and try the waters, it will be very rewarding!
